Is it okay to kill a preacher?

The media are consumed with the shooting at Virginia Tech, but I'm more interested in the obscene murder trial of Mary Winkler, accused of killing her husband, Matthew, a preacher.

Mary Winkler has taken the stand to say that the only way she could speak to her husband was at the point of a gun. He was very critical of her. But mostly, he was a preacher. He merited death.

I'll give her one thing, he had really bad taste in women.

He may have been abusive, but, seriously, that shouldn't even count. Unless she shot him while he was sleeping . . . in self-defense. There's an answer to abusive spouses that doesn't involve murdering them, just like there's an answer to cheating spouses that doesn't involve murdering them.

And I have a hard time that there was any talking "at the point of a gun". There was her shooting him while he was asleep at the point of a gun.

But just in case there was, if he didn't see what was coming, he didn't just have bad taste in women, he was an idiot. Once a person starts pulling a gun on you as a way to "talk to you", it's not gonna be long before bullets become the main method of communication.

Plus, if he was abusive, he probably would have talked her down from her gun-weilding and then beat her to death, which is fairly typical in abusive relationships where the abusee tries to take power by force.

For her sake, I hope she has pictures. Pictures are worth a zillion words, and if she has some record of physical abuse, it'll be a lot more likely to sway the jury than to say "he was mean".

But speaking of the shootings at Virginia Tech--this dude was obviously a loon, and let it be known if a dozen different ways to the point where the people in his writing class stopped going because they didn't want to be in it with him. But was he reported? Arrested? Detained? Expelled? Put on a watch list? Did the U of V think of hiring some armed security (and, if there had been armed security on the U of V campus, I guarantee you the death toll would have been lower, and the perp would have died a lot sooner, but it might never have happened because the perp wouldn't have felt he could get off enough rounds to really make an impression).

And how is it that 4 years of a liberal education did fix this guys brain? Didn't they try to boost his self-esteem?

He was reported to 'counseling' by his English teacher. But, hey, I'm NOT in favor of universities arresting, detaining, and expelling people based on their differentness. I mean I might be if I were in charge of deciding who was different. heh. heh. heh. But, unfortunately, moveon.org and a hundred other little weird liberal groups are in charge of deciding who is weird on a college campus. They might get Cho in the process of their many Cultural Revolutions but, for sure, folks like me, conservatives, would be the first ones shot . . . Which, by the way, is why I prefer students not to carry guns. When guns are allowed, only liberals and pacifists will have guns.

And by the way on the issue of the Winkler wench... How much of a weakling do you have to be, today, not to be able to get in your freaking car and leave your husband?

I'm sick of all this pro-woman propaganda every where you look and we still have these bitches whining on the witness stand that 'he abused me'.

Well too f*king bad. Get your butt up off the couch, get your freaking shoes on and walk out the door. Take your kids with you, for God's sake. How much of a vegetable are you that you can't figure this out?

There is a government program on every corner to help these allegedly abused women and, really, God, I'm a woman myself and I'd like to slap them myself.

What does it take for these dames to stand up and act like adults? If they can't do that, and if they insist on shooting the guy, then they should shut up and go to jail without whining.

I know several in abusive situations.
They don't think clearly.

It's so frustrating.

IMHO, by going to a shelter you've effectively covered your butt. If you kill your spouse at a later date you could at least say you tried to get away from him or her.

I'll be at the shelter if you need me.

LOL Mark!

You're absolutely right, Walker. If he had been abusive for so long, why didn't she leave? My feelings on this reflect both yours and Kevins, and also echo Kevins feelings on this week's murders at VA Tech. I especially like this: "And how is it that 4 years of a liberal education didn't fix this guys brain? Didn't they try to boost his self-esteem?" Great talking point! :)
