Best comment on the insulting Absolut ad
From the LA Times Blog
If Mexico really stretched to Oregon, they'd all be sneaking in to Washington State.

Talk about the decline of civilization ...
I JUST FEEL LIKE TALKING.

As an Absolut ad for the Mexican market, I gotta say . . . this doesn't really offend me. You'd figure the Mexicans that think that's such a great idea are probably just the sort of people that thinking drinking lots of expensive vodka is a great idea, too.
But it's a real political goal of Mexico, and they are well on their way to achieving it, but developing political majorities in border states and weilding their political power in border states (and especially border towns). Mexifornia is well on it's way to being a reality.
The problem with Mexico is it is hyper-regulated, difficult to own and accumulate property and start a business, difficult to create binding contracts, difficult to build and protect capital unless you are already super wealthy. Mexico is a beautiful country with numerous natural resources and a vibrant tourism industry, and for good reason. A set of ambitious political reforms--mostly involving capital formation, starting business, and property ownership--would set that economy on fire.
And it's irresponsible that they don't. One of the reasons the global economy is so sensitive to what happens in America is that America has one of the freest and most un-encumbered economic systems in the world (believe it or not). If Mexico would reform it's laws, then maybe we could get Canada to do it, too. Then we really would have free trade between nations.
